    Dog Vaccinations

Being a responsible pet owner should also mean taking full charge on the health and well-being of your dog, as well as the people around him. While rabies are considered to the most popular and dreaded virus in the pet world, it is by far just one of the many possible deadly diseases that can easily snuff the life out of your beloved pet. Vaccinations are the best-known preventive measures for canines and in effectively eliminating the possibility to spreading disease among other animals and humans as well.

We know for a fact that in human beings, the typical duration of vaccines for measles would usually last up to 15 years, there have been no concrete study on the projected length of immunity for animals. Some vaccines require to be administered on an annual basis, while others are usually given more than once a year. As to the efficacy of vaccines, it has not yet claimed to offer 100% guarantee but have played a rather significant role in canine disease prevention throughout the years.

    Recommended Puppy Shots

Vaccinations for puppies are considered to be highly crucial in assuring that your pet will be able to enjoy a long and healthy life. A newborn pup is naturally susceptible to diseases. However, its very first antibody is derived from its mother’s blood through the placenta. The next level of immunity is effectively derived from the first milk called colostrums given after birth. This is immunity are believed to provide puppies blanket protection for several weeks. After its effeminacy, puppies are left open with what is known as the window of susceptibility where puppies are more likely to contract diseases without the protection of antibodies.

So when would be the best time to administer vaccine shots on puppies? According to experts, the highly recommended time would be between 6 weeks, as puppies have been known to respond more favorably to vaccines at this age. To ensure effectiveness, boosters should be given every three weeks until the puppy has reached sixteen weeks old. The AVMA Council has recommended core vaccines shots on dogs, which includes: distemper, canine adenovirus-2 and canine parvovirus-2. Other supplementary vaccines such as canine leptospirosis, coronavirus, parainfluenza and Bordetella bronchiseptica are also highly recommended. Make sure to discuss this more thoroughly with your veterinarian.
