Iams Pet Foods - A Brief Overview
Iams Animal Studies Iams does conduct animal food studies for their products. They have several guiding principals in this process. Iams states that they do animal studies for the basic reason that they cannot sell their products to their millions of customers (and by extension their pets) without testing them thoroughly to make sure that they are safe. Iams sticks by their policy of not funding studies that take the lives of cats or dogs and they have a strict retirement program for the pets in their system. They attempt to get their adoptable pets adopted as well. Iams conducts animal studies in three different places. These places include pet owner s homes, Iams Pet Health and Nutrition Center, and places that dogs and/or cats are already living such as kennels. Iams conducts pet food studies on animals other than dogs and cats only when there are no alternatives. They also do not conduct studies where the animal could reasonably be expected to be harmed in the studies. Iams Nutrition Studies and Commitment Iams has a commitment to pet food nutrition. Iams pet foods provide true nutritional health care, according to the company. One example of this commitment is the addition of Iams Daily Dental Care formula to all Iams dog foods. This addition has been proven to reduce tartar in dogs by 50%. In 2003, an animal rights group began a campaign to prevent Iams from continuing their pet food nutrition study programs. According to Iams, the group s claims about animal mistreatment were unfounded. Iams Products Iams pet food has a wide range of products including dog and cat food products for puppies and kittens, adult animals, and senior animals. They also have products separated within those categories for just about any situation an animal may be in. For example, they have products for overweight animals, large a small breeds, and naturally processed food for consumers that prefer those products. Many of their common products are simply differently flavored as well since animals, like humans, may prefer different flavors. |
